Description:
Sequencher™. Computer software for analyzing and aligning DNA sequences. The program fits into the broad category of "bioinformatics tools" and includes an array of functions including DNA to Protein translation, restriction site mapping, sequence editing, electropherogram review, mutation detection, and multiple sequence alignment. The central features are most closely linked to sequenced clustering and sequence contig management. It is used by biologists and laboratory technicians in the sequencing of DNA samples and the analysis of DNA sequences.
M-FISys™. The name is an acronym for "Mass-Fatality Identification System". M-FISys is an integrated software program used by forensic biologists and medical examiners to identify human remains and to match DNA profiles (sometimes referred to in the press as DNA "fingerprints") between sources. The name is a reference to the 9-11 mass fatality at the World Trade Center for which the tool was created, but identifications need not be from mass fatality incidents. The program manages large volumes of DNA profiles that have been derived by the operator using one or more of several forensic typing techniques including STR's (short tandem repeats) mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA typing) and SNP analysis (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism analysis). Matching can be done between multiple human remains (in a fragmentary case), between a person and an exemplar (e.g., the exemplar can be a toothbrush or a crime scene sample) or between profiles from related individuals. QA functions and site mapping are among the many subsystems in the program.
